Paradigm changes and new challenges for media education: Review and science mapping (2000-2021)

Information, communication, and digitalization technologies have driven the unlimited access to knowledge, thereby promoting creativity, economic cultural development, emergence of a global world at breakneck speed over recent decades. Across its multiple dynamics, this digital revolution has opened new educational opportunities that are closely connected emerging and, recently, artificial intelligence. These advances had an unexpected impact on people’s lives, altering values society our understanding role education modern school in scenario communication. In context, media arises from clear influence electronic devices technology society. The aim study is review scientific relevance terms “media education” “educommunication” during last two decades describe evolution basis terms, locations, thematic stages, methodological approaches using systematic quantitative–qualitative 598 articles collected Web Science between 2000 2021. results suggest such interest can be divided into viz. reflections terminological diversity (2000–2012) measurement, implementation, training, educommunicative digitization technological–digital development (2013–2021). We conclude studies transdisciplinary field, which historically been spread across North South America, Europe, Africa, North/South East Asia–Pacific region, broadened their perspective early criticism consider “glocalization” education, directing toward Global South, algorithmic literacy, ethical–critical (self-)management individual collective identity.
